RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Degree: M. Phil:
Project title: “A Correlative study of the Serum Titer of Triiodothyronine and Blood                                 Acetylcholinesterase Enzyme activity in an Organophosphate Pesticide                                  Exposed Male Rose-ringed Parakeet.”
Project Description: In spite of the fact that wild birds are very often exposed to different organophosphate (OP) pesticides through consumption of contaminated food in agricultural fields, influence of sublethal exposure of such OP pesticides on the metabolic activities of exposed birds remain obscure. This lack of knowledge initiated the author of this dissertation to make an adequate and elaborate attempt to investigate for the first time, the impacts of sublethal OP pesticide (Methyl parathion) exposure on the level of circulating thyroid hormones, and relation thereto, the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in blood of the concerned avian species. The withdrawal effect of the administered pesticide in the concerned bird was also examined. The basic information that emerged from the current investigation include-

  • The activity of the given OP pesticide to inhibit AChE activity in blood varies in relation to the dose and duration of exposure, but the change induced is reversible.
  •  Methyl parathion appears to be a potent inhibitor of serum T3 titres depending on the duration and level of exposure, but the change is reversible.
  • Lack of any direct correlation between the levels of serum T3 and AChE activity in blood among most birds suggest that they may be independent of each other or their responsiveness to OP pesticide may be mediated by some other factor(s), which has not been considered in this experiment and needs further investigation.

Degree: Ph.D.:
Project title: “Seasonal female Reproductive cycle and its functional relationship with other                              Endocrine organs in the common Indian House Sparrow (Passer domesticus                              indicus).”
Project Description: Passer domesticus indicus is a very common avian species in the Indian sub-continent and is widely available in the state of West Bengal. This species has significant ecological status as a voracious feeder of several insects that cause ecological and economic damage by destroying agricultural food grains. However, this species also consumes several varieties of food grains which have imparted a special status to the species in the ecological and economic matrix of India. Recently, it has been reported that the population of this species is fluctuating because of several environmental factors like rapid rate of urbanization, intense industrialization, climate change, uncontrolled use of electronic devices, use of chemical pesticides to boost up agricultural production, among other factors. These factors have considerable impact on the endocrine system of the species. On this background, the first chapter aims to establish the functional relational relation between female gonadal cycle and the changes in the histology and biochemistry of thyroid and adrenal medulla. Interestingly, the findings showed alteration of follicular diameter of undifferentiated and moderately differentiated ovarian follicles. In some months, fully differentiated ovarian follicles and atretic follicles were totally absent depicting a nonbreeding phase in the gonadal cycle. The thyroid exhibited an anti-gonadal relationship in this species. Serum thyroxine level of the species exhibited a positive correlation with adrenal norepinephrine content, but a negative correlation with adrenal epinephrine content.
The second chapter of the study deals with the dose and duration dependent effect of Propylthiouracil (PTU), an anti-thyroidal drug, on the female gonad and adrenal medulla of the species during the peak breeding season. The experiments, revealed that low dose and longer duration was more effective than the high dose and short duration of PTU treatment. Also it has been observed that PTU causes thyroidal hyperactivity with high levels of Triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroxine (T4) in serum, retarded gonadal activity along with accumulation of cholesterol and depletion of ascorbic acid. Adreno-medullary catecholamine hormones possess a regulatory effect on avian reproduction. This issue was addressed in the third chapter through administration of Guanethidine sulphate, used widely for chemical sympathectomy of the adrenal medulla, in the adult female Passer domesticus indicus during the peak breeding phase of the annual gonadal cycle. A significant gravimetric reduction of body, adrenals, thyroid and ovary was observed. Cholesterol and ascorbic acid acted as indicators of the treatment. Ovarian follicular immaturity with increment of cholesterol concentration and inhibition of ascorbic acid served as the indicator of low steroidogenesis. The thyroid appeared hyperactive histologically and the T3 level in blood exhibited elevation, whereas, the T4 level declined after the treatment. The experimental results, thus prove, that Guanethidine sulphate produced ovarian immaturity. The overall results may serve as baseline data on the impact of environmental stress on the endocrine system of female Passer domesticus indicus and urges for the need of future research in this domain.
