About the Department

Established in 2000, the Department of Microbiology at Dhruba Chand Halder College offers both General and Honours programs under the affiliation of Calcutta University, starting from the academic session 2000-2001.

Located on the first floor of the Science Building in the northeast corner of the college campus, the department features two modern classrooms and two well-equipped laboratories, fostering an ideal environment for academic and practical learning.

The department is staffed by four dedicated faculty members and one non-teaching staff. Our educators are highly qualified, teaching both Honours and General syllabi through a dynamic rotation of topics. Faculty members actively engage in professional development by attending workshops, seminars, and conducting research to stay updated with advancements in Microbiology.

The Microbiology syllabus (Honours and General) was updated by Calcutta University in 2009-2010, with the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) introduced in 2018. The department has developed a structured module to teach topics sequentially, starting with foundational concepts and progressing to advanced ones, ensuring students grasp the material effectively. Interactive ICT-based teaching methods are employed to enhance engagement.

To support student learning, the department conducts regular group discussions to address difficulties and implement remedial measures. Teaching methods encourage active participation, fostering a stimulating and stress-free learning environment. Guardians are kept informed about their ward’s performance and attendance, particularly when improvement is needed.

The department is equipped with a desktop and a laptop for internet access and document management, alongside a departmental library housing over 100 national and international books on Microbiology theory and practicals. Students are encouraged to utilize these resources to deepen their knowledge.

Our state-of-the-art undergraduate laboratory is equipped with advanced instruments, including a spectrophotometer, cold centrifuge, gel electrophoresis system, BOD incubator, freezers, and refrigerators. All students gain hands-on experience with practical experiments, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.

To bridge academic learning with real-world applications, the department organizes industrial and institutional visits to prestigious organizations such as the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, National Institute of Biomedical Genomics, IFB Industry, Metro Dairy, and Vivekananda Institute of Biotechnology. These visits expose students to cutting-edge research and industry practices.

Our alumni have achieved remarkable success, securing positions in reputed institutions and industries across India. Many have excelled in competitive national examinations for postgraduate and PhD programs, while others serve as Assistant Professors in state government and aided colleges or work in leading research institutions and industries.
